“Turkey has the audacity to criticize Israel. But what are the facts on the ground?” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on Tuesday on social media.

The ministry stated that thousands of Turkish military personnel are stationed outside Turkish territory, and Ankara maintains military bases and outposts in Cyprus, Syria, and Iraq. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Turkey “occupies 36 % of Cyprus, 5 % of Syria, and approximately 2,000 square kilometers of Iraq.”

The Israeli foreign policy agency also compared Turkey’s military presence to Israel’s actions in Syria. The statement claims that Israel “temporarily controls 0.1 % of Syrian territory” as part of the so‑called “security zone,” which, according to the Israeli side, is necessary to protect the country’s citizens.

Israel established control over the Golan Heights, which previously belonged to Syria, during the Six‑Day War in 1967. In 1981, Israel extended its legislation, administration, and jurisdiction to this territory.

The UN continues to regard the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory. The buffer zone between Israeli and Syrian forces, established by the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement, also remains in place and is under UN supervision.
