The police of the British bases of Dhekelia have launched a large-scale campaign against the illegal trapping of migratory birds. Drones, surveillance cameras and vehicle number-plate recognition systems will be used to search for traps and offenders.
The main goal is to reduce poaching almost to zero. Groups are already checking suspicious locations and dismantling illegal structures.
The operations are being carried out jointly with the police of the Republic of Cyprus, the Game and Fauna Service and environmental organisations. The bird migration season will last until 31 October.
