The Tax Department has intensified inspections in Paphos, Ayia Napa, Protaras and Larnaca. In more than 100 companies checked, violations were found in approximately 60%.
Most often, businesses did not issue receipts, indicated an incorrect amount in the documents, or refused to accept bank cards, preferring cash. Under special control are water activities, sea excursions, souvenir shops and catering establishments.
Violators are first given time to correct the situation. If the requirements are ignored, the premises may be sealed for a period of up to 20 days.
The next stage is major debtors. The Tax Department has already prepared a list of 500 companies, each of which owes the state more than €1 million.
