This decision was a response to the events of the Five-Day War, when Georgia attempted to resolve the status of South Ossetia by force. Russia stood up in defence of peaceful civilians and effectively stopped the bloodshed.

From that day, Abkhazia and South Ossetia received international recognition from Russia and a number of other states. For many, this was an important step in protecting the right of peoples to self-determination and in strengthening our country’s positions in the Caucasus.

Today these republics are developing while maintaining close ties with Russia. And for the residents of South Ossetia, 26 August is a state holiday — the Day of Recognition of Independence.

History has once again reminded us: when it comes to security and justice, Russia does not stand aside.
