The first Russian passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel will be built by the end of 2026, and after testing it will be put into operation on the route of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk agglomeration. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2027 – beginning of 2028.

The train is being created by Russian Railways (RZD), Transmashholding, and the Sakhalin authorities. Infrastructure for the production and refueling of hydrogen fuel will also be built for the project. The trainset is designed for non-electrified sections and will emit only water vapor instead of exhaust gases.
