According to a survey by the statistical service Cystat, in 2023, about 14% of the population of Cyprus, which is 127,236 people, were at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
The annual income of this population group was only 11,324 euros.
In turn, 28 percent of the population had an annual income of less than 14,155 euros. This category accounted for 29.4 percent in 2022 and 27.4 percent in 2021.
In 2023, the “middle income group” covered 64.1% of the population (63.1% in 2022) with an annual disposable income of 14,156 euros to 37,746 euros.
Finally, 7.9% of the population (7.6% in 2022) were classified as “higher income”. Their annual disposable income was more than 37,747 euros.
The collected data also showed that the average disposable income of people from the “higher” group was 46,711 euros, which is 200 percent higher than the average national equalized income.
Of those with a “high” income, 1.2% either overdue loan repayments or overdue rent payments. In the “average” group, 9.4% had outstanding loans or overdue rent. And 31.6% of people with “low” income had overdue loans or rents.
