The Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA) has announced the start of an infrastructure project worth €2.3 million.

A contract worth €2,259,499 plus VAT was signed by EOA Chairman Konstantinos Yiorkadjis and the director of the contractor company C. Roushas Trading and Development Ltd, Kostas Rousias. The project is financed from two sources: two-thirds of the required amount is provided by the state, while the remaining third is covered by EOA funds accumulated through stormwater fees paid by property owners.

The works will affect a section of the collector located under Digenis Akritas Avenue on the stretch from Vasilopotamos to Kotsirkas, between the intersections with Kallipoleos and Larnacos Avenues. The structure, built about fifty years ago to channel the Kotsirkas river into a pipe, has suffered severe corrosion and wear over decades of operation. The repair and strengthening are planned to be carried out using modern and innovative reinforced concrete methods, which will eliminate problems affecting the safety of vehicles passing over the collector.

EOA Chairman Konstantinos Yiorkadjis noted that the organisation, having taken over the management of the stormwater drainage system, promptly identified this structure as a priority for intervention.

He added that the EOA’s goal is to carry out works every year at key problem points throughout the Nicosia district in order to gradually improve the infrastructure and reduce the likelihood of flooding. The organisation’s annual budget for such purposes is around €2 million. The next major project, he said, will be the Archangelos area, with works planned for next year. The EOA is also making progress on projects that for decades were under the responsibility of the central government, including flood protection structures in Dali, retention ponds in Engomi, and works on Navarinou Avenue.

Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos emphasised the importance of this project, noting that flooding in the capital is no longer a rarity. According to him, floods now occur not once every five years, but four to five times a year, which is why such infrastructure upgrades are critically necessary to protect the city.

The project is scheduled to last 28 weeks and will be carried out in stages. The authorities have assured that the public will be regularly informed about temporary changes in traffic arrangements during the construction works, which will be coordinated with the police and the Municipality of Nicosia.
