On the eve of the new school year, the administration of the Russian-speaking school “Pupils of Pythagoras” and staff of the Russian Orthodox Educational Centre organised and conducted the educational trip “Orthodox Cyprus” with the school’s teachers. During the trip the participants visited the most important spiritual centres of Cyprus: the mountain monasteries of the Kykkos Icon of the Mother of God and of the Mother of God of Trooditissa, as well as the village of Omodos, where they venerated the Bonds of Christ. The Kykkos Monastery houses a national shrine of the Cypriot people, the icon of the Merciful Mother of God, which according to tradition was painted by the Apostle Luke. Also, on the summit of Mount Throni the participants of the trip visited the tomb of the first President of the Republic of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios. At the Monastery of the Mother of God of Trooditissa the teachers learned about a dramatic period in the history of Cyprus — iconoclasm — and how the icon of the Mother of God was saved and about the miracles that flow from her holy Image. A distinctive feature of this trip was that its participants were teachers who are starting their work in Cyprus for the first time.
