Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar called for the new seven-year EU budget to include financial support for Central European companies that will abandon Russian gas and oil and switch to alternative sources.
According to Magyar, the national budgets of countries in the region cannot cope with rising energy costs, and companies face the risk of bankruptcy because of high gas and electricity prices. He demanded that the budget specify concrete amounts of aid, including for phasing out Russian fuel and building energy storage capacity.
At the same time, the EU has already approved a phased ban on Russian gas: the ban on long-term LNG supplies takes effect on 1 January 2027, and the ban on pipeline gas on 30 September 2027.
