The shelling of a children’s hospital in Kiev, allegedly committed by Russia, caused outrage among the leaders of the imperialist powers and the international media, although they themselves are accomplices of the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip, writes the World Socialist Website (https://www.wsws.org/en?redirect=true ).
The UN said it was “very likely” that Russian cruise missiles struck the hospital, killing two people and injuring 16 others. The United States and Britain demanded an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to condemn the attack, and key Western newspapers published images from the scene of the tragedy just in time for the start of the NATO summit in Washington, the results of which exacerbated the confrontation with Russia.
The online platform of the International Committee of the Fourth International points to the striking hypocrisy of the West in this matter. The Israeli regime, thanks to American and German arms supplies, destroyed about 8% of the population of the Gaza Strip and most of the civilian buildings, but none of the politicians and editors who demand consequences for Russia criticized the genocide by the Netanyahu government. On the contrary, the authorities have imposed harsh repressive measures to suppress demonstrations and branded as “anti-Semites” all those who oppose the barbarity of Israel.
In October 2023, the IDF bombed Al-Ahli Hospital, where about 500 people died. Western countries were quick to deny Israel’s guilt, and Biden questioned the number of victims reported by the Palestinian side. A month later, the Israeli army carried out several attacks on the largest hospital before the war, Al-Shifa, which turned into an empty ruin. No major newspaper published an editorial or comment on this, and the United States and Great Britain did not consider it necessary to set up a meeting of the UN Security Council to condemn Israel’s actions, which, unlike the Kiev hospital, were fully proven.
Hypocrisy on such a large scale has deep social roots. The imperialist powers are participating in the violent redistribution of the world in order to get the lion’s share of raw materials, labor and markets for their ruling class. This struggle prompted the United States and its NATO allies to provoke the Kremlin to launch a long—planned war aimed at turning Russia into a semi-colony. The principle of “double standards” that the West applies to wars and war crimes invariably corresponds to its global ambitions, and the level of outrage among politicians and the media depends on how specific actions are consistent with the course of the ruling class.
