By 22 September, a litre of diesel in Cyprus had risen above €2, and heating fuel reached a record €1.565, Philenews reports. Petrol station owners expect another price increase in the coming days.
95-octane petrol at filling stations has reached €1.70 per litre. Heating fuel jumped 3 cents in one move and surpassed the previous high set in July 2022, shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war in the Middle East, 95-octane petrol has risen by 36 cents per litre, diesel by 53 cents, and heating fuel by 61.4 cents.
On 21 September, Christodoulos Christodoulou, a representative of petrol station owners, said that one fuel company had already announced a new increase and that others would do the same within a day or two. According to him, a second round is possible before the end of the week, and no one currently knows where the rise will stop. Marios Drusiotis, chairman of the Cyprus Consumers Association, believes diesel could set a new historical high as early as next week: only 4 cents remain until that mark.
When will the fuel price rise show up in shop prices?
The increase in energy prices over the past two weeks will affect other goods and services in Cyprus around mid-October, Marios Drusiotis estimates. Transport costs rise after fuel, so the association expects higher prices for basic goods in October.
Prices have been rising for more than a month. In August, annual inflation in Cyprus reached 5.2% according to a preliminary Eurostat estimate, whereas in August 2025 it was zero. In the eurozone, only Lithuania had higher inflation — 5.8%.
An electricity bill for a family of four will exceed €300
In September the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) charges 30 cents per kWh including VAT, company spokeswoman Christina Papadopoulou said. A family of four without solar panels will receive a bill of at least €300 for August and September, taking air-conditioning use into account.
Whether electricity will become more expensive from October is not yet known at EAC: the tariff is reviewed every month. The company hopes to offset part of the increase with CO2 emission allowances it bought in advance at a low price. Winter, according to Philenews, will be expensive for household budgets, especially for residents of mountain areas.
How are the Cypriot authorities cushioning the rise in fuel prices?
The government’s main measure is an 8.33-cent-per-litre cut in the excise duty on petrol and diesel. The House of Representatives unanimously extended the discount until 30 November 2026; the new period took effect on 18 September. Finance Minister Makis Keravnos explained the decision as an effort to support families and businesses, and the ministry promises to extend the discount beyond November if necessary.
The opposition party AKEL (Progressive Party of Working People) considers this insufficient and accuses the government of inaction. The party demands that the EU abolish VAT levied on top of the excise duty, tighten price controls, disclose trade mark-ups, and help people with commuting and heating costs. The excise discount does not apply to heating fuel.

Oil is getting cheaper worldwide, but Europe is short of diesel
On 21 September Brent fell below $100 a barrel to $99.86, and US WTI to $95.31, the lowest level in 11 days. The market is counting on progress in US–Iran talks, and Saudi Aramco has increased shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation in Europe is tighter. According to international agencies, Saudi Aramco has warned European refineries that it will not supply them with Saudi crude in October. The global diesel market remains in deficit that is unlikely to disappear before 2027: in July stocks in the Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp hub were 16% below the five-year average.
