Cyprus is ahead of the EU average

Life expectancy after retirement varies substantially across European countries.

According to a Euronews study based on Eurostat and OECD data for 2024, this figure in Cyprus is higher than the European Union average.

🇨🇾 How many years do Cypriots spend in retirement?

The average life expectancy of men after reaching retirement age is 19.8 years. For women, the figure exceeds 22 years.

By comparison, the EU averages are:

👨 Men — 18.4 years.

👩 Women — 21.8 years.

Among EU countries, the longest retirement period for men is recorded in Luxembourg — 22 years. The shortest is in Bulgaria and Hungary, at 14.7 years each.

The average retirement age in the EU is 64.7 years for men and 64 years for women.

📊 The study takes into account expected life expectancy after reaching retirement age, not the actual number of years spent receiving a pension. Many Europeans continue to work even after becoming entitled to pension payments.
