Petrol prices in Cyprus rose by 6.2% over the month, the fourth-largest increase among EU countries. This is according to Eurostat data for August.

Petrol rose more sharply only in Spain — by 8.2%, Romania — by 6.6%, and Italy — by 6.3%.

Across the European Union as a whole, petrol prices rose by 3.3% in August compared with July. Increases were recorded in 22 EU countries, prices fell in three countries, and remained unchanged in two more.

Diesel rose even faster. On average in the EU, its price increased by 8.3% over the month. Growth was recorded in 26 of the 27 EU member states.

The overall trend in motor fuel prices also remains high. In August 2026, fuels and lubricants for private transport in the EU cost on average 23.8% more than a year earlier. By comparison, the annual increase was 16.9% in July and 13.7% in June.

The largest year-on-year increases were recorded in Bulgaria — 34.5%, Lithuania — 28.8%, Finland — 27.6%, Germany — 27.5%, and France — 27.4%.

The Eurostat figures cited do not include a separate indicator of the annual change in the cost of fuels and lubricants specifically for Cyprus.
