The Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) and the Ministry of Energy have launched a backup mechanism in case of an electricity shortfall. An adverse scenario is being considered in which natural gas supplies and the launch of Cyprus’s electricity interconnection are delayed.

The authorities have already appealed to the EU and are preparing a procedure to bring in additional generating capacity. Particular concern is focused on the period after 2029, when some of the generating units at Dhekelia are planned to be taken out of service.

At the same time, even if natural gas arrives in Cyprus in June 2028, CERA estimates that about another year and a half will be needed for testing and for power plants to fully switch over to the new fuel.

💡 These are preventive measures — this does not mean that an electricity shortage has already occurred.
