The robotic assault tank Shturm, presented at the Chebarkul training ground in the Chelyabinsk region, is built on the chassis of T-72 and T-90 tanks and is designed for combat in urban conditions. It is equipped with a 125 mm gun with a shortened barrel, which allows the turret to traverse between buildings, as well as a bulldozer blade for clearing rubble and all-round protection against anti-tank weapons.
The tank has no crew on board. Three operators, performing the roles of commander, gunner, and driver, control it from a separate armored vehicle positioned well behind. If necessary, the tank can also be operated by a crew in the conventional mode.
Its main role is for the robot to enter the most dangerous part of an assault first, draw fire, and destroy enemy firing positions at close range, while the people controlling it remain outside the kill zone.
This was not the only unmanned system presented at the exercises. Russian forces also demonstrated an unmanned version of the Terminator armored fighting vehicle and remotely controlled T-90M tanks fitted with the Arena active protection system, which shot down approaching drones.
