Cyprus has the lowest share in the EU of residents who cannot afford meat, fish, or a vegetarian equivalent every other day.
According to Eurostat data for 2025, 1.2% of Cyprus residents said they cannot afford a meal with meat, chicken, fish, or an equivalent vegetarian alternative every other day.
For comparison, the EU average is 8.5%, and the highest figure was recorded in Romania — 18.1%.
The indicator reflects a lack of money for such food, not a voluntary refusal of meat or a choice of diet.
At the same time, a low share of people with such difficulties does not mean that life in Cyprus is cheap. A family may be able to afford basic food but still face financial pressure from rent, utility bills, and transport.
The data were published on October 7, 2026, but they describe the situation for the previous year — not current prices in shops.
