Malaysia is confident of Russia’s support in joining BRICS — Bloomberg

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Russia would support the country’s application to join the BRICS group, Bloomberg reports. The ministry noted that during a two-day visit to Kuala Lumpur, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov assured Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of this.

As the news agency reminds, before that, Ibrahim said that the country had already applied to join the bloc, which is chaired by Russia in 2024. “This potential membership opens up great prospects for both countries and underlines our commitment to strengthening international cooperation,” the Prime minister said.

For Malaysia, membership in the BRICS also opens up access to financing and provides a political platform independent of Washington’s influence. Earlier, Anwar criticized the US position in the war between Israel and Hamas, and also stated that Malaysia and Russia are unanimous in calling for a permanent ceasefire in the Middle East, immediate humanitarian assistance and recognition of Palestine as a full Member of the United Nations.
