Cypriot football fans staged a massacre with stones and Molotov cocktails

On the evening of September 15, the Cyprus Football Championship match between AEL and Apollon clubs was canceled. This decision led to clashes between fans and the police. Three officers were injured, one of them seriously.

The police blamed the disruption of the match and the riots on AEL fans. According to her, a bag with firecrackers and Molotov cocktails was found before the match, and a small fire broke out near the Alphamega stadium.

In order not to be physically controlled, AEL fans sprayed aerosols against controllers and police officers and forced their way into the stadium. When they were asked to return to be screened, most ignored the call.

After the announcement of the cancellation of the match near the stadium, according to the wording of the Alpha TV channel, chaos began. Stones and Molotov cocktails were thrown at the police. In response, the guards used tear gas and a water cannon from an Aiantas armored vehicle.

As Limassol Police Chief Andreas Angelidis told Cyprus News Agency, three officers were injured: one was hit by a stone, a woman was burned, a marine flare hit a member of the MMAD special squad in the knee (he was hospitalized).

According to the Cyprus Times, angry fans caused damage to cars parked near the stadium in Kolossi. On the evening of September 15, Limassol police managed to detain only three rioters.

The march of about 500 fans of the Omonia Football Club on May 29 along Niku Pattihi and Leontiou I avenues and their protest action near the Limassol Central Police Station passed without incident.
