Successful results could be expected from Russian SAMBO wrestlers at the World Youth Sambo Championship, which was held in Larnaca, Cyprus, but it was hard to imagine that domestic athletes would surpass their competitors so much. This opinion was expressed by the president of the All-Russian Sambo Federation Sergey Eliseev.
The Russians won 44 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals at the tournament. Athletes from Kazakhstan, who took second place in the medal standings, won 3 gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze awards.
“On the one hand, success was expected, because the guys passed both the selection and training camps, and participated in additional tournaments. Therefore, all our teams – youth, cadet, and junior – were ready for the competition. But, of course, we did not expect that they would break away from the competition so much,” Yeliseyev said.
According to the President of the World Sambo Federation (FIAS) Vasily Shestakov, about 700 athletes from 33 countries took part in the World Youth Championship. “Such a huge number of athletes participated for the first time,” the head of FIAS said, “this was also due to the fact that for the first time we allowed young people to participate in combat sambo competitions, whereas before they competed only in the sports sambo category.”
Shestakov noted that this innovation has led to the fact that the number of participants in the championship has increased by more than 100 people. “This, of course, put an additional burden on the shoulders of the organizers, but they coped with this task well, there were no disruptions. And I would like to sincerely thank both the President of the Cyprus Sambo Federation, Marios Andreou, and the Larnaca authorities for everything,” concluded the President of the World Sambo Federation.
The Russian Embassy in Cyprus paid maximum attention to the Russian participants of the World Youth Championship. The head of the diplomatic mission, Murat Zyazikov, watched these competitions from the stands and personally congratulated our wrestlers and their mentors on a brilliant performance.
