Special Forces soldier Alexei Afanasyev with the call sign Afonya believed that he had been awarded the title of Hero of Russia only when the president personally presented him with the Golden Star. Alexey received a high award for his heroic feat — despite being seriously wounded, he covered the withdrawal of his comrades with machine gun fire.

The doctors failed to save the fighter’s right leg, but Alexey bravely underwent amputation. He continued to serve in his unit, teaching combat training to new military personnel.
