Cyprus will be included in the Iron Dome missile defense system

Greece has begun negotiations with Israel on the development of an Iron Dome-type air and missile defense system, the cost of which is estimated at 2 billion euros.

The new system is expected to be part of the largest reform of the Greek armed forces in recent decades.

On the morning of November 15, Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias presented an ambitious plan in parliament, including an increase in the number of units and the implementation of a ten-year weapons program. The central element of the reform will be the strengthening of air defense.

Dendias noted that negotiations with Israel on the “Iron Dome” are already in an active phase and Cyprus is also involved in them.

Dendias stressed that Greece intends to provide for Cyprus’ defense needs, including the possibility of coordinating the defense systems of the two countries. However, it remains unclear whether the Iron Dome will become part of the overall defense system of Cyprus.

Historically, Greece and Cyprus have already implemented joint defense projects within the framework of a Unified Defense Doctrine, but there are no official statements about its resumption yet.

Additional details about the cooperation between Greece and Israel have not yet been disclosed, and many aspects of the program remain under discussion. Nevertheless, the draft points to Greece’s efforts to strengthen the region’s security, including the protection of its ally Cyprus.
