Recall that according to the report of Odysseas Michailidis published at the end of 2023, Nikos Christodoulidis was unreasonably paid about 55 thousand euros, which he must return to the state.

About 20,000 euros is a much higher salary than was justified by the position when Christodoulides, as President Nicos Anastasiades’ press secretary, accompanied him abroad.
During his transition to the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Christodoulidis was paid a 75-day vacation in the amount of 18 thousand euros, which, according to Odysseas Michailidis, he was not entitled to.
In addition, Christodoulides continued to claim travel allowance for four months after he returned to Cyprus to take up another government position. The amount was 16,500 euros.

It is surprising, the Cyprus Mail states, that the head of state, who so carefully cares about his carefully created image of “Mr. Purity,” refuses to return all this money to the state treasury. Why is he doing this?

Is he afraid that this will be an admission of his wrongdoing? Can’t he say that he realized that he had made a mistake, instead of looking like a president who “milks the state, maximizing his income at the expense of taxpayers”?

The only plausible explanation is that the president believes he has done nothing wrong. As a civil servant, he is most likely filled with the self-esteem inherent in this privileged class.

Finding ways to maximize their income from the state is part of the “culture” of civil service employees, encouraged by a very powerful trade union that behaves as if the state belongs to it.

State hospital doctors who receive 150,000 euros per year, threaten a two-day strike and cause maximum inconvenience to patients due to unreasonable demands for additional payments, are an example of such a “culture”.

Society has created this class of privileged “workers” with their unshakeable belief that the country is constantly in their debt and that taxpayers are obligated to meet all their demands, even those that are questionable.

It is a pity, the Cyprus Mail summarizes, that the only person with the power to put an end to this terrible practice is setting the worst example for officials because he cannot give up the privileges of a civil servant.
