There is still gender inequality in Cyprus.

Equality between men and women is a fundamental principle of the European Union, but gender stereotypes are not easy to eradicate, they still persist in some States.

Cyprus is one of them, as a new survey from the Eurobarometer shows.

In particular, the respondents were asked to answer the statement that the most important role of a man is to make money.  The majority of respondents in Cyprus (53%) said they agreed with this statement. At the same time, respondents in the European Union as a whole did not agree with this. There were 56% of them.
Next, people were asked to express their opinion that the most important role of a woman is to take care of the home and family. The majority of participants in Cyprus said they agreed with this – 51%. On the contrary, on average in the European Union, the majority of people said they disagree (about 60%).

Compared to the corresponding survey conducted in 2017, again by the European Commission, the percentage of those who believe that a man’s most important role is to earn money has increased by 14% in Cyprus today. While the position that the most important role of a woman is to take care of the home and family decreased by 9%.

Judging by the survey, the responses of younger people, namely from 15 to 24 years old, also cause a sensation. Regarding the role of men and money, 56% of men and 65% of women surveyed agree with this. The same thing is observed in positioning, if the most important role of a woman is to take care of the home and family. In fact, women mostly (about 66%) agree, while 44% of the men surveyed also agree. Cyprus’s results were above the European Union average.

It is worth mentioning that the European Union is moving in the opposite direction. The new directive, which member states are asked to implement by June 2026, sets a target for large companies to have 40% women among non-executive directors and 33% among other directors. Although the representation of women on company boards has improved significantly in several EU member States, stagnation remains on this front in some countries. Fines are provided for violations.
