The latest EU study confirms that the population of Cyprus is aging. According to new data, in 2023, people over the age of 65 made up 18% of the population, while in the European Union they make up 21%.

The latest European Commission report “Health in Europe at a glance” even says that the percentage of people over 65 in Europe tends to increase. From 16% in 2000, it reached 21% in 2023 and is projected to reach 29% by 2050. Countries such as Italy and Portugal have the highest percentage, reaching 25% of the population.

Women live longer than men in all countries, including Cyprus. However, the report found that women are more likely than men to suffer from chronic diseases. Specifically, in Cyprus, 85% of people over the age of 65 face at least one chronic problem, and after the age of 65, about 58% report that they face restrictions in their activities.

And all this despite the fact that 40% of medical workers in Cyprus are over 55 years old.

The aging of medical personnel is a growing concern in many EU countries. In 2022, 40% of doctors in almost half of the EU countries were over the age of 55, raising concerns about a possible large wave of retirements in the coming years.

However, Cyprus is at a good level in terms of the ratio of doctors, as it corresponds to 5.4 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants, compared with the European Union average of 4.2 per 1,000 inhabitants.
