On December 9, a 6-year-old boy who was hospitalized five days ago with a diagnosis of gastroenteritis died in a Nicosia hospital.

Reports of the death of a six-year-old child who was sent from the Paphos General Hospital to Nicosia for treatment provoked a strong reaction from the mayor of Paphos. Fedonas Fedonas stressed the urgent need to improve medical facilities in the region.

In his post condemning the tragedy, the mayor stated that the death of the child was the result of the fact that the Paphos hospital “could not cope with this case” and did not have available beds to provide the necessary medical care.

“A 6-year-old boy from Paphos died this morning after suffering from gastroenteritis 5 days ago. He was sent to a hospital in Nicosia, as he did not have enough beds in Paphos. Some people don’t put the lives of young children in anything,” Fedonas wrote on his Facebook page.

He added that if the situation does not change, “two or three more children will die before the end of winter.”

The tragedy occurred just a day after the mayor reported another case where a child with pneumonia had to be urgently transported from Polis to Limassol, as local medical facilities could not provide the necessary treatment.
