Cyprus’ Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou said on Sunday, January 2, that desalination plants will operate on an ongoing basis to help reduce the strain on the island’s reservoirs and provide farmers with water.
Until now, the work of enterprises depended on weather conditions. Panayiotou noted that drought cycles have become more frequent, but stressed that the ministry has implemented a 28-point program to combat such conditions. She also mentioned that the upcoming summer will be difficult due to the drought.
The main goal of the Cyprus Department of Water Resources Development is to ensure uninterrupted water supply on the island. Last year, farmers faced interruptions in the water supply. Panayiotou said that the level of water availability is likely to be lower than last year, as this is the second driest year in a row.
“The desalination plants will operate continuously, regardless of weather conditions, to satisfy us 100 percent as part of the implementation of the action plan that we have launched to ensure that there is enough water in the dams for our farmers,” Panayiotou said.
She said that work is also underway to use mobile desalination plants.
“The state is doing everything possible, but it needs the cooperation of both local authorities and citizens,” she said, urging people to use water sparingly. “This is a precious resource, we need to stop wasting it.”
