The Cypriot delegation to the United Nations has sent a letter to the Security Council condemning Turkey’s “violations” of Cyprus’ airspace and territorial waters.

A letter distributed to the members of the Security Council states that in July and August, 328 violations of the island’s airspace and 16 violations of its territorial waters by Turkey were recorded.

Of these airspace violations, 93 were allegedly committed by Turkish unmanned military aircraft, and another 56 by “armed military fighters.”

The letter added that these actions represent “another clear violation of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus” and reflect “Turkey’s usual blatant disregard for the UN Charter and international law.”

In addition, it refers to the “illegal use of closed ports and airports” on the island in connection with the continued operation of Ercan Airport (Timbu) and the ports of Famagusta and Kyrenia by Turkish Cypriots for commercial purposes.

It goes on to say that Turkey enters the buffer zone almost daily and “strengthens the military infrastructure in the occupied areas,” and that these actions indicate Turkey’s “constant aggressive behavior on the island.”

This, it is claimed, “undermines the sense of security of all Cypriots and efforts to resume negotiations.”

At the same time, it is emphasized that, “despite” what is stated in the letter, the Cypriot side of the Greek Cypriots is “absolutely committed” to working closely with UN Envoy Maria Angela Holguin and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres “to create the necessary conditions for the resumption of negotiations” on resolving the Cyprus problem.

There was also positive news on the issue of violations of the buffer zone: Guterres wrote that “a decrease in the number of cases of progress and violations related to overstaffing” was recorded in the first half of the year.

He also wrote that “a particular source of tension in the buffer zone” in the first half of this year was “a small number of Greek Cypriot civilians who persistently engaged in unauthorized activities, ignoring the UNFICYP mandate to preserve the integrity of the buffer zone.”

“This activity was often compounded by incidents of misinformation regarding the role of UNFICYP,” he wrote.
