Former leader of the British Labour Party, British MP Jeremy Corbyn, said that the British military base in Akrotiri in Cyprus is being used as a transit point for arms supplies to Israel, which, according to him, increases the island’s involvement in the Middle East conflict. This is stated in the AKEL party’s press release.
Corbyn’s message was sent to the Left Group of the European Parliament during their working meetings in Cyprus. The politician, who is a member of the House of Commons, a former leader of the Labour Party and co-founder of the left-wing socialist movement “Your Party”, stressed that the use of the Akrotiri base for military purposes actually draws Cyprus into an escalation of the conflict.
He called on the international community to fully support the Palestinian people’s right to a free and secure life, end the Israeli occupation, and condemn what he called “genocide,” as well as practical solidarity with the Palestinians.
In his address, Corbyn also criticized the European Union’s defense policy. According to him, under the leadership of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a “military economy” is being formed in the EU, accompanied by increased spending on weapons and the accumulation of military reserves amid ongoing conflicts.
In addition, he pointed to the socio-economic consequences of austerity and free market policies in Europe — increased poverty, increased social inequality, pressure on the social security system and the strengthening of the positions of far-right parties.
“We must find answers to economic and social problems and resolutely resist racism in any form,” Corbyn said, calling for a broader discussion of war and peace on the European continent.
