Russia’s largest mainline coal conveyor has already started operating in the Uglegorsky district of the Sakhalin Region. A 23-km-long closed-type ribbon connected the Solntsevsky coal mine with the Shakhtersk seaport, making it possible to abandon the transportation of fuel by heavy trucks.
Investments in the project exceeded 23 billion rubles, the Ministry of Investment, Industry and External Relations of the region informed InfoTEK.
“A project to create a mainline coal conveyor is being implemented on the territory of the Uglegorsk Municipal District. Its length is 23 km, it connects the coal mine and the seaport of Shakhtersk. The conveyor made it possible to switch from using vehicles to a more environmentally friendly and cost–effective way of transporting coal from the place of its extraction to the place of shipment,” the ministry noted.
Thanks to the new system, it was possible to reduce transportation and transshipment costs, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and increase production volumes.
The conveyor capacity can reach 4 thousand tons per hour.
“At the moment, construction and installation work on the creation of the main conveyor has been completed. Commissioning and commissioning of a small technological path, including a main conveyor, two stacker reclaimers with their own conveyor systems in the port, have been carried out,” the ministry said, adding that the conveyor itself was commissioned in 2025.
Currently, the construction of a system is continuing at the facility, designed to further reduce the cost of loading and increase its stability. Its launch is scheduled for 2026.
The project was implemented within the framework of the Vladivostok Free Port regime, which gave the investor tax benefits. The government of the Sakhalin Region previously stressed that abandoning motor transport would reduce the load on roads and help the region achieve carbon neutrality.
