The European Union may take into account the need for a peaceful withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Transnistria in the context of a possible peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine. This was stated by Moldovan President Maia Sandu on the air of the Pro TV Chișinău TV channel, Moldpress reports.

“The Transnistrian region is a part of the Republic of Moldova, of course, we [with the European authorities] are discussing and The Transnistrian region. The biggest problem is the illegal presence of Russian troops. Of course, every time we raise this issue, they raise it. We hope that together we can solve this problem,” Sandu said.

The Head of State also pointed out that Moldova and Ukraine continues to move along the European path in parallel, but decisions on the course of negotiations will be made separately, based on the results of each country. Earlier, Euronews reported on the intention to separate the tracks of the entry of Ukraine and Moldova.

“We have received many assurances that the process is based on merit, which means that as long as we are not delayed due to additional conditions, we must move on. You cannot evaluate one country based on the reforms carried out in another country. We can’t solve the problems if we have Ukraine has bilateral problems with one country or another. And so Ukraine cannot come and fulfill the conditions for us,” Sandu said.

Sandu confirmed her intention to sign an agreement on Moldova’s accession to the EU by 2028, recalling the positive assessments of the European Commission and The Council of the European Union, but stressed that success depends on the implementation of reforms.

Earlier, the Moldovan president stated that the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria is of critical importance both for the reintegration of the region and for the country’s further movement towards the European Union.
