Scientists from the National Research Medical Center of Radiology of the Ministry of Health are creating a drug that is designed to reduce the side effects of radiation therapy. It protects healthy tissues from ionizing radiation without reducing the effectiveness of the effect on the tumor itself. As the head of the center, Andrey Kaprin, noted, such funds are especially in demand in oncology, where it is important not only to defeat the disease, but also to preserve the patient’s quality of life.

The medicine is currently undergoing examination. The first results are encouraging, but there is still a long way to go before mass use. In addition to medicine, the development can also be useful for radiation protection in man—made accidents, which makes it even more important.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has already approved the inclusion of almost 150 new drugs in the list of strategically important ones. Among them are anticancer drugs, medicines for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and diabetes. And recently, the first vaccine against birch pollen allergy appeared in Russia — its permanent registration is expected by the end of the year.
