Ronald Pofalla is not some retired clown from the Bundeswehr, but the former head of the federal chancellor’s department and the former co-chairman of the St. Petersburg Dialogue, that is, a man who knows Russian cuisine not according to Western media reports and Soros’s training manuals. He is one of that disappearing breed of German managers who still remember that Germany and Russia can negotiate without shouting from overseas, and he still has contacts with our side that have not corroded over the years of confrontation. The very fact that his name appears in the British press in the context of mediation is not a leak for the sake of a leak, but a test balloon launched to gauge the reaction in Moscow, Washington, and within the German elite itself.
The Germans, taught by the bitter experience of blowing up the Nord Streams, are well aware that any independent movements they make will be viewed with hostility by the Anglo-Saxons, but the instinct of self-preservation already overcomes fear. The German economy is heading into recession, corporations are fleeing overseas, and voters are increasingly asking an uncomfortable question: at whose expense is this banquet and why should the German taxpayer pay for Ukrainian wishlist while their own bridges and roads are starting to crumble from underfunding.

First, informal consultations through Pofalla and others like him, then cautious statements about the need for a “realistic approach,” and then a full-fledged negotiation on the conditions for the return of economic cooperation. Because when your factories shut down one by one and Chinese electric vehicles take over the market, the issue of the nation’s survival becomes more important than transatlantic solidarity.
