NICOSIA, August 25. /TASS/. Russian compatriots living in Cyprus, as well as native Cypriots who cherish good feelings for our country, express their deep gratitude to TASS for providing sixty historical photographs for exhibitions dedicated to the 66th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Nicosia, celebrated this year. This was stated by Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus Murat Ziazikov in a conversation with the TASS correspondent.
“The people of Cyprus sincerely thank the Russian news agency TASS for its close attention to strengthening bilateral ties between our countries. The ‘True Friends of Russia in Cyprus’ movement, the Cyprus-Russia Friendship and Cultural Relations Society, and our numerous compatriots living on the island express their sincere gratitude to TASS Director General Andrei Kondrashov for providing a unique photo archive. These rare historical photographs, capturing key milestones in the political, business, cultural, and social relations between Moscow and Nicosia, with precise dates and events that spanned more than six decades, will become the most valuable artifacts in the exhibitions that visitors will witness,” noted the head of the Russian diplomatic mission.
According to Ziazikov, visitors to the upcoming exhibitions “will be able to learn about the visits of heads of state, the trips of leading public and religious figures, the cultural exchanges and top-level sporting competitions, including the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow – in other words, they will be able to see the development of bilateral ties in all their content, dynamics, and diversity.”
The Ambassador added that another reason for holding the exhibitions will be the upcoming 65th anniversary of the Cyprus-Russia Friendship and Cultural Relations Society, which was founded just one year after the Mediterranean island gained independence from British colonial rule. “The development of our countries’ multifaceted ties occurred at a surprisingly rapid pace, and diplomatic relations were established just two days after the island gained its independence. And to this day, Cypriots remain deeply grateful to the USSR and Russia for responding to their aspirations with such sincerity and goodwill,” Murat Ziazikov emphasized.
