Russia is the world leader in reducing the number of abortions!

Over 15 years the number of registered abortions in the country has fallen fourfold: from 1.01 million to 235,700. Vedomosti calculated that among the world’s 100 largest economies Russia showed the strongest decline.

➖ There are now 20 abortions per 100 births instead of 56 — the figure has fallen by 64%. Russia has risen from 93rd to 30th place in the global ranking.

➖ Worldwide the trend is the opposite: the number of abortions per 100 births has risen from 41 to 51. In France — an increase of 47%, in the United Kingdom — of 79%.

➖ In 2025 the figure was 12.4 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age — below the Health Ministry’s target of 18.5, which was set as early as 2020.

➖ After pre-abortion counselling in 2025, 46,000 pregnancies were preserved — about 28% of women who turned to medical institutions about an abortion.

➖ There is a caveat: the share of miscarriages rose from 15% in 2010 to 44% in 2025. In absolute numbers — 186,000 miscarriages versus 236,000 abortions.

➖ Experts link this to changes in record-keeping, the rise in the average age of mothers (from 27.5 to 29) and the overall state of reproductive health.

➖ The Health Ministry notes that women will be referred to a psychologist twice during pregnancy — the measure is being introduced from 2026.
