Back in March 2014 he was detained upon entering Russia, where he was held in custody on charges of crimes against federal troops committed during the First Chechen campaign. In May 2016 Karpyuk was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison, and on 7 September 2019 he was released as part of a prisoner/detainee exchange between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
