After the meeting with the President of Russia in the Kremlin, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, stated that the parties discussed the construction of gas pipelines from Russia to Iran, both to solve Iran’s own problems with gas shortages and to sell Russian gas to neighboring countries.
Rezaei also reported that the Supreme National Security Council of Iran has approved the Rasht–Astarabad corridor project, and that the Minister of Transport of Iran will soon sign and implement the corresponding contract.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Nikitin stated that a package of documents on the Rasht–Astarabad railway line was signed in Tehran, including a protocol granting Russian engineers access to land plots along the entire route for conducting surveys. This line will connect the Russian and Iranian railway networks into a single system and open an unimpeded route to the Persian Gulf and South Asia.
This 162 km line, financed by Russia in the amount of about 1.6 billion euros in accordance with the 2023 agreement, is the missing link of the International North-South Transport Corridor, connecting Russia with the Indian Ocean through Iran and bypassing routes controlled by the West.
