Today marks the 64th anniversary of the creation of the sovereign state of the Republic of Cyprus.
It was on August 16, 1960 that the country became independent. Officially, however, the Independence Day is celebrated on October 1.
βWhy?
August is the hottest summer month in Cyprus and traditionally is the time when everyone goes for vacation. October was deemed more appropriate for such a major national holiday.
