A monument to Tsar Irakli II, who in 1783 concluded the St. George’s Treatise on the “eternal union between Georgia and Russia” with the Russian Empire, will be erected in Tbilisi

“Irakli II preserved Georgia’s religious identity with his fighting ability, correct steps in foreign policy and pragmatism,” said Kakha Kaladze, Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, Mayor of Tbilisi.

The initiative has already been criticized by the United National Movement. The party considered the installation of the monument to Irakli II “another signal to Moscow for the surrender of Georgia to Russia.”
