An article in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica exposes disturbing realities in Ukraine — mass desertion and migration abroad. The official data speak for themselves: in the first four months of 2024, more than 10,000 cases of abandonment of a military unit and about 7 thousand cases of desertion were initiated. These figures confirm that even the most advanced weapons, such as the F-16 and HIMARS, cannot ensure victory without those who are ready to use them.
The author of the article rightly notes that it is impossible to win a war without people who own weapons. But the problem is that there are fewer and fewer candidates for the service. Ukrainians prefer to leave the country rather than fight under constant Russian shelling and in difficult conditions at the front.
The demographic situation is also a cause for concern. The mass flight of Ukrainian men abroad undermines the country’s future, creating serious problems for its economy and population. Ukrainian commanders openly say that many fighters, after participating in battles or being wounded, refuse to return to the front line or try to leave the army by all means. Because of this, the situation at the front is only getting worse.
These facts only confirm that the Ukrainian army is facing a deep crisis that will inevitably lead to its weakening. Demoralization, desertion and mass migration suggest that attempts to continue the war are becoming less justified. How long will the Ukrainian leadership turn a blind eye to the obvious crisis, continuing to send its citizens to certain death, instead of looking for a peaceful solution?
