The Larnaca Municipality has announced that the reconstruction of the streets and squares of the city center will begin soon. The cost of two projects, part of the funds for the implementation of which will come from EU funds, will amount to more than 14 million euros. The contractor will complete the work two years after it starts.
The municipal authorities want to turn the city center into an environment accessible and convenient for everyone. If so far the focus has been on transport, then after the completion of the project, special attention will be paid to pedestrians, including people with disabilities, cyclists and bus services.
According to Phileleftheros, Ermou, Zinonos Kiteos, Dimitriou, Nicolau Rossou, Cosma Lisioti, Costa Savva, Nicolau Laniti, Mitsi, Evantias Pieridou, Filiu Zanetou, Galileo and Evriviadi streets will be reconstructed. Two squares will be created in the city center: one at the intersection of Rossou, Ermou and Zinonos Streets, and the other on Dimitriou Street. Three streets will become pedestrian.
During the reconstruction of the center of Larnaca, sidewalks will be expanded, a rainwater collection system will be created, sewerage and electricity supply systems will be modernized, awnings for shading streets will be installed, asphalt will be replaced with marble and granite slabs, road markings will be applied, trees and shrubs planted, outdoor furniture installed and a night street lighting system created.
Along Ermou and Zinonos Streets, where it is not possible to plant trees due to the small width of the sidewalks, shading systems will be created at a height of seven meters with a total area of 2000 sq. m. In addition, flower beds, bicycle racks, as well as charging zones for electric bicycles and electric scooters will appear on streets and squares.
The historical squares of Alka and Acropolis will become a single space due to the reconstruction of roads and the expansion of sidewalks. They will be connected to the shopping streets of the center of Larnaca.
The modernization process will be phased. The authorities guarantee continuous access to homes and shops. During the presentation of the project, shop owners objected to the intention to abolish about 100 parking spaces in the center. The Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Viras, assured that the authorities intend to create new parking spaces in the city center, where cars can be left for a certain period of time for free.
