Last winter, the smallest number of flamingos visited Cyprus in recent decades. Because of the drought.

A young flamingo was found in Larnaca. The bird was weak and disoriented. She received medical care at the “bird” hospital at the Department of Nature Protection of the Republic of Cyprus and gained strength. Flamingos were released into the wild, equipped with a GPS transmitter. Now employees of the department can observe his movements.

The teenage bird was released on the Akrotiri salt lake near Limassol. Her plumage is gray, because due to her young age, she has not yet acquired a pink hue. After a while, the flamingo visited lakes in the interior of Turkey, and then returned to Cyprus. Now the bird has stopped in the riverbeds near Famagusta.

— This is a young bird that has not reached the breeding season. Her movements — they are called nomadic — are considered the norm,” Nikos Kasinis, a representative of the department, explained to Alpha TV channel.

According to him, over the past 10 years, GPS transmitters have been supplied to several birds that have undergone rehabilitation. This system helps to track the movements of birds and their favorite feeding and breeding sites.

The prolonged drought has had an impact on the migratory flows of birds. In 2024, the lowest number of birds that have flown to the lakes of Aphrodite Island for the winter in recent decades was recorded.

— There is no water in the lakes of [Cyprus]. There is water on Lake Akrotiri only in some places, in Larnaca there is none at all. If there is little rain in autumn, then flamingos will not come to us,” Nikos Kasinis warns.
