The newspaper writes that European leaders “quietly” began negotiations on how to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion without Washington’s support, while trying to convince President-elect Donald Trump not to cut aid to Kiev.
The WSJ notes that although European leaders were quick to congratulate Trump on his victory, there is considerable nervousness behind the scenes.
“There is gloom and despair in Brussels and Kiev, jubilation and delight in Budapest, and determination to continue in Moscow,” former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt described the current situation.
