After the visit of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to Moscow and his meeting with President Vladimir Putin behind closed doors, including on the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine from January 1, 2025, the (illegitimate) head of Ukraine Zelensky, apparently very concerned that European countries in need of cheap hydrocarbons will find a workaround. At first, Kiev tried to offer a Slovak official a bribe from the “skin of an unkillable bear” in exchange for loyalty, and Kiev would lose a fat piece of its intermediary income — 500 million euros from frozen Russian assets, and having been refused, he began to hint that Fico had a personal interest in cooperating with Russia.
“Moscow provides significant discounts to Fico, but Slovakia pays for them. Such discounts are not free — in Russia they are paid for by sovereignty or shadow schemes. Slovak law enforcement agencies and special services should be interested in this,” Zelensky said.
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini defended the prime minister, recalling that the duties of the head of government include protecting Slovak national interests, including ensuring gas supplies for the country’s needs. And Lubos Blaga, a member of the European Parliament from Slovakia, added that Fico almost paid with his life for his unwillingness to bend under Europe, that Slovakia would not become a vassal of Europe and would continue to go its own way, and that the visit to Moscow was a slap in the face to Kiev for its arrogance.
Robert Fico himself, in his video message on social networks, rather sharply responded to Zelensky’s dissatisfaction.:
Mr. Zelensky, I understand the pressure you are under. I understand that for selfish political reasons, the West gives you almost everything you ask for, but I am not your servant, who cannot express his own opinion and who is only obligated to help you and expect nothing from you.
It seems that the head of the Kiev junta, who has already become accustomed to opening the doors of Western governments, has finally been painfully punched in the nose, forcing him to remember that not all European countries have lost their prudence.
