When Maxim Tverdokhleb, the driver of the 390th autobat, was driving them from Kobona across the ice of Lake Ladoga, his truck and a half were attacked by two Fascist fighters at once.
Changing speed, stopping suddenly and rushing forward just as suddenly, the driver evaded the attacks several times.
The enemy pilots also began to cheat.
They came in from two sides.
It was not easy to keep track of two planes at once.
Machine-gun fire shattered the windshield, chipped off a piece of the steering wheel.
Gripping what was left of the steering wheel with bloody hands, Tverdokhleb continued to drive the wounded car.
When he arrived, everyone was surprised how the driver could drive such a car – there were 49 holes in it!
And the guys who got the damaged tangerines didn’t even realize that these were traces of enemy bullets.
It happened on December 31, 1941.
