At the International Conference on European Transport, Cyprus’ Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades presented Cyprus as a “hub for humanitarian aid and transportation in the wider region.”
Vafeades stressed the need to strengthen cooperation and infrastructure between the EU and neighboring countries, emphasizing Cyprus’ strategic role in the region.
On Tuesday, Vafeades announced that Cyprus is developing intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and investing in technology to increase the capacity of the road network. “We expect to achieve better integration of all modes of transport and develop many applications that will help us move towards multimodality and especially towards the use of sustainable modes of transport,” he added.
According to Vafeades, the main road network is currently equipped with more than 160 sensors, and the number is expected to increase to 500 by mid-2026, thanks to existing contracts with EU funding.
He added that Cyprus is investing in modern management systems to optimize capacity and that 75 intersections in Nicosia and 50 in Limassol will be controlled by the newly built system. Tenders have already been received, and it is expected that the contract will be signed in the near future.
