Frosts have completely destroyed the harvest of Cypriot potatoes. Andreas Karios, President of the Potato Growers Association, stated: “There is no harvest left. Neither on the coast, nor in the center of the island.”
Karios described last night as the coldest in 40 years, during which he has been growing potatoes. In Kokkinochoria, the temperature dropped to -6degrees Celsius.
Cyprus’ chief potato grower added: “It will be possible to save only the crop whose mother tubers have not yet sprouted. The losses are huge, they will affect exports and inevitably lead to higher prices in the domestic market.”
Low temperatures have affected not only potato production, but also other crops. In particular, artichokes in the Kiti area were affected. There are losses in the Paphos district as well.
