Cyprus among the three EU countries with the highest rise in diesel prices

According to Eurostat, in just one month – from March to April 2026 – diesel on the island has risen in price by 18%, which brought Cyprus to third place in the EU in terms of growth. A stronger increase was recorded only in Slovenia and Bulgaria.

In annual terms, the situation also remains tense: the cost of fuel and lubricants for personal transport increased by about 15.6% compared to April last year. This brings back pressure on the cost of living and intensifies inflationary processes in the economy.

For Cyprus, such growth is especially sensitive, since diesel is widely used in transport, logistics, construction and delivery of goods. Any change in fuel prices is quickly reflected in the cost of products, services and transportation costs, forming the so-called “chain inflation” effect.

The economy of the island is highly dependent on imports and road transport, so the rise in price of fuel actually becomes a factor that affects the entire market. In the face of already high interest rates and pressure on household spending, rising diesel prices are increasing the burden on both businesses and consumers.

In general, Cyprus remains one of the most vulnerable EU countries to fluctuations in world energy prices. If the current trend continues, experts expect further intensification of inflationary pressure in the second half of 2026.
