In Russia, construction has been completed and a fiber-optic backbone has been launched that connected the western and eastern parts of the country with exits to the borders of China and Mongolia. The new line is intended for transmitting internet traffic between Europe and Asia.
The throughput of the backbone can exceed 1 Pbit/s, while the signal delay on certain sections of the route is significantly lower than when transmitting data via submarine cables.
Construction of the line has been underway since 2020, including with the use of Russian components. The backbone is designed for a minimum of 25 years of operation and will become the foundation for the development of data centers, cloud services, and artificial intelligence.
