Former leader of the DISY party Averof Neofytou came up with an initiative to review and lift the European Union’s energy sanctions against Russia against the backdrop of rising fuel prices in Cyprus and other EU countries.
According to the politician, Europe should follow the example of the United States, which has begun to ease restrictions on supplies of Russian diesel fuel.
“There are moments when it is necessary to make bold decisions in order to protect one’s citizens. Today is exactly such a moment,” Neofytou stated.
He called on the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, to raise the issue of lifting energy sanctions at the European Council summit.
“We cannot continue shooting ourselves in the foot. Europe must show political realism, and Cyprus must take the initiative into its own hands,” the politician emphasized.
The reason for the statement was the agreement of U.S. President Donald Trump with Russia on diesel fuel supplies. The deal provoked sharp criticism from a number of European leaders and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who believe that such agreements help finance the ongoing war.
At the same time, some European politicians supported the initiative, noting that a reduction in fuel prices is necessary to protect the economy and consumers.
Thus, the issue of energy sanctions has once again become the subject of political disagreements in Europe.
