Peskov called the birth rate in Russia a disaster for the future

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he considers mothers with many children to be heroines. According to him, Russia is close to disaster due to the low birth rate of 1.4.

“We live in the largest country in the world. And there are fewer of us every year. And it is possible to cope with this only by increasing the average fertility rate. It is now at a terribly low level — 1.4. This is comparable to European countries, Japan, and so on. But this is catastrophic for the future of the nation,” Dmitry Peskov said at a meeting with participants of the New Media Festival.

The official representative of the Kremlin also noted that mothers with many children are the heroes of the country. According to him, heroism can have many faces. “This hero may be the hero of a special military operation. And this hero may be a bespectacled nerd who invented a cure for cancer. And this hero may be a gray-haired 90-year-old man who wrote some kind of philosophical work,” said Mr. Peskov.

According to the data Rosstat according to the results of 2023, the total fertility rate in Russia’s figure was 1.41, which is the lowest figure for the last 17 years. At the same time, in 41 regions, this coefficient was lower than the national average. In early July, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that the decrease in the number of women of reproductive age in Russia will last until 2046.

Experts from the Center for Macroeconomic Analysis and Short-term Forecasting note that the government needs to adapt existing measures to support fertility to the needs of families from regions with different levels of economic development.
